    Description

A fine close-up profile portrait taken by Mathew Brady from the series "Prominent Portraits. No. 2930. Maj. General John C. Fremont. Published by E. & H.T. Anthony & Co. New York." Civil War era. Fremont is wearing what appears to be a military uniform and rests his hand on a table cloth that is tinted red. Likely taken in 1861 when Fremont was an officer in the Union Army. This has fantastic three-dimensional effect in a viewer bringing Fremont to life. This image was also published by Anthony as a CDV. This stereoview format is far scarcer and is part of Anthony's stereoview series of Civil War officers.
Near excellent condition. See both scans.

Although Fremont served in the early part of the Civil War, he is better remembered for his explorations of the western frontier and for being the first Republican candidate for president. President Abraham Lincoln gave Fremont command of the Department of the west at the beginning of the war but after Fremont issued an emancipation edict on his own freeing the African American slaves, he was relieved of his command. Fremont became rich during the California gold rush and was one of the first two Senators from California.
